Cellarius Star Charts

German born immigrant of Holland, Andreas Cellarius was a noted mathematician, cosmographer, writer and Headmaster of the Latin School in Hoorn, Germany. Of his numerous works, Cellarius is most recognized for the breathtaking celestial star charts, Harmony of the Universe, created in 1661. This graceful compilation of 26 old celestial map prints features a combination of religious, mythological and scientific views of the cosmos. Designed to illustrate the prevailing theories of the time, the star charts include Ptolemaic, Copernican and Brahean views of the universe. Richly adorning these celestial maps are images of cherubs, angels and astrological figures of epic proportion. Enter a world of star charts where these antique map prints combine science and mythology for a beautiful cosmic mosaic.
